The Story
The Barhi is the most versatile and seasonally fascinating of all date varieties. Originating from the ancient date-palm groves of Basra in southern Iraq — a civilization that has been cultivating dates for over 5,000 years — the Barhi is unique because it is prized at multiple stages of ripeness. At the Khalal (crunchy) stage, it is eaten raw like an apple — sweet and slightly astringent. At the Rutab (half-ripe) stage, it becomes one of the most extraordinary foods on earth: a golden, impossibly soft date that quite literally melts away like the finest butterscotch. Its thin skin barely contains the liquid caramel inside.
Cultural Significance
Deeply embedded in Iraqi heritage, particularly in Basra which was historically one of the world's most important date-producing regions. The Barhi is also widely grown in California and Israel, where it is often sold still on the bunch at farmers' markets during the brief late-summer season.

Nutritional Intelligence
Barhi dates at Rutab stage are highly perishable — refrigerate immediately and consume within 1–2 weeks. Dried Barhi (Tamr) can be stored in an airtight container for up to 6 months refrigerated. Do not freeze Rutab — it destroys the texture.
